We love air fryer frozen fries and have made a full, comprehensive guide to air frying frozen french fries, with tips, recommendations for seasonings, sauces, and more! Check it out for more fries recipes! You can see toaster oven-style air fryer instructions there, too.
Ingredients
- Frozen steak fries, any brand: Use any brand of steak fries (or even potato wedges) you like best! If you want to cook another variety, like shoestring or crinkle-cut fries, be sure to see our comprehensive guide to air frying frozen french fries linked above. It covers everything you need to know!
- Light olive oil: You can use another high smoke point vegetable oil, too, or even a spray like avocado oil spray, as long as it has no additives. Learn more with our guide on air frying oils. We like olive oil for fries because it tastes great and has a high smoke point! Oil helps the fries reach that perfect crispy texture while remaining fluffy inside.
- Salt: Plus any other spices, seasonings, and herbs you might want to use according to your taste preferences! We generally recommend using kosher salt as it tends to add better flavor than table salt. For herbs, try thyme and rosemary.

How to Air Fry Frozen Steak Fries

Step 1 - Preheat your air fryer to 400°F. While it preheats, take the frozen bag of steak fries out of the freezer and pour it into a large bowl. Drizzle the fries with light olive oil, then toss until all of them are coated. Sprinkle on a bit of salt for more flavor, plus any other seasonings you may want to add (like black pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, or even cayenne pepper or our chili seasoning), then toss them again to coat completely. Some fry brands may come pre-seasoned; if so, feel free to skip seasoning.

Step 2 - Once the air fryer is done preheating, pour the frozen steak fries into your air fryer basket, arranging them in a single layer as much as possible. Some overlap is fine, but don't overcrowd the basket, or they won't crisp up properly. In our recipe testing, we found an average 16 ounce bag of frozen steak fries fits perfectly in our 7 ounce air fryer basket.

Step 3 - Air fry for 12-15 minutes at 400°F. After 12-15 minutes, your steak fries should be perfectly golden brown and crispy. Carefully remove them from the air fryer, then serve and enjoy as the perfect side dish!
Homemade Fries
Want to make your own tender, fluffy homemade fries? See our guide to air frying homemade fries! It uses simple ingredients, and you can follow the same instructions for homemade steak fries by varying how you cut the potatoes.
Recipe Tips
See our section on Troubleshooting below if you have a specific problem, such as the fries not crisping up or burning.
- Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. This leads to uneven cooking and the fries won't get crispy.
- Make sure to check the nutritional information on your package of fries if you need exact info. The listed nutrition in the recipe card is specific to the brand we used!
Troubleshooting
- Steak fries not crisping up? Make sure your air fryer basket isn't too crowded. Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Use an oil sprayer filled with your preferred oil to spray the fries rather than tossing them in oil - this might help.
- Burned the fries? Lower the temperature and the cooking time. Shake the basket more often during the cook time, and ensure you're not using too much oil, as this can singe the outside of the fries.
- Unevenly cooked fries? Shake the basket frequently and make sure you're not overcrowding the basket. If you're using homemade fries you froze yourself, they need to be cut to a uniform size to cook evenly!
Serving Suggestions
- Chicken sandwiches. A classic pairing we personally love, especially with our crispy Air Fryer Chicken Sandwich.
- With juicy burgers. What could be more classic than fries and a burger? We have a turkey burger recipe that pairs well with these fries.
- Steak tips. Naturally, steak fries go very well with steak tips. Honestly, this is one of the best pairings! Try our air fryer steak tips for an easy method.
- With your favorite dipping sauce, like classic ketchup, or even barbecue sauce, ranch dressing, or honey mustard.
- Loaded fries. Break up crispy bacon into bits and sprinkle it over your steak fries with shredded cheese, sour cream, and chives (or green onions). This is a great choice for using up leftover steak fries, too!

Storing Leftovers
Store any leftover steak fries in the refrigerator in an airtight container. When ready to reheat, reheat them in the air fryer at 400°F for about 3 minutes to get them crispy again.

(You can also use oil spray in a spray bottle - see our air frying oils guide.)16 ounces frozen steak fries, 1 Tablespoon oil, ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- Pour the seasoned frozen steak fries into the preheated air fryer basket in a single layer. Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket or the fries won't cook properly.
- Air fry at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, being sure to shake the basket halfway through air frying time.

Notes
-
- Fries not crispy enough? Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Increase the temperature or cooking time a little bit, if necessary. Use cooking spray instead of oil, but remember: use an oil sprayer filled with your preferred oil. Do not use a pressurized cooking spray with additives as it can damage the nonstick surface of your air fryer!
-
- Burned the fries? Lower the temperature and cooking time, shake the basket more often, and don't use too much oil. See our guide to air frying oils if your oil doesn't seem to be working well for you.
-
- Fries not cooking evenly? Shake the basket frequently and avoid overcrowding. If you're using homemade french fries you froze yourself, make sure they've been cut to equal sizes.
- Nutritional value is based off of generic frozen steak fries. Please check the packaging of your frozen fries for accurate nutrition.
