Toast in Air Fryer

It’s never been difficult to make toast, but are the results always what you want? By design, a conventional toaster is more likely to toast bread more towards the middle, not evenly. Not to mention, you have to clean out the crumb tray.

To put it simply, air frying toast is way, way better than the toast you get from your average toaster. In an air fryer oven, every inch of your bread will be toasted to golden, crispy perfection!

Whether you enjoy plain toast with jam or peanut butter, or want to toast up a croissant, bagel, English muffin, or even raisin bread, we have the step-by-step instructions you need to make the perfect toast in the air fryer, every time.

Ingredients

  • Sliced bread, your preference: You can use any type of bread you prefer, from white bread, sourdough, and rye, to wheat bread. For croissants, bagels, English muffins, raisin bread, and whole grain bread with seeds, see our section on Air Fry Times for Other Types of Bread under the instructions below.

Note: this recipe is for regular toast, not Texas toast. If you want to make garlic toast, see our guide to making Frozen Garlic Bread in the Air Fryer.

How to Air Fry Toast

Bread in air fryer basket ready to toast to golden brown perfection.

Step 1 - Place slices of bread in the air fryer basket in a single layer. No need to preheat. Don't worry; bread like this isn't light enough to fly around in the air fryer like other light foods.

Step 2 - Air fry at 400°F for 6 minutes. Turn each slice over halfway through the cooking time. Set a timer if you need to, this makes a difference!

Step 3 - Remove your air fried toast from the basket, and serve. Enjoy however you like your toast!

Times vary for gluten-free bread due to the difference in ingredients. Test anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes, starting at 3 and increasing the time if the bread isn't browned to your liking.

Tips

  • Recipe time and temperature is based on a cold air fryer. If cooking multiple batches, check on them early, as they will cook more quickly than the first batch.
  • We are using a basket style air fryer. If you have an oven style air fryer, place the bread on the lower rack and flip halfway through the cook time.
  • 6 minutes in the air fryer and flipping halfway through air frying will toast the bread to a nice golden brown on both sides. If you prefer your toast to be extra dark and crispy you’ll want to air fry a minute or so longer.
  • If you want your toast to be less golden brown, check it around 5 minutes.
  • Cook time may vary depending on your specific air fryer. As always, use the cook time and temperature as a guide until you are more comfortable with your specific brand of air fryer.
  • If you have an air fryer with multiple compartments, you can cook more of our air fryer breakfast recipes in the other compartment to save yourself time!

FAQ

Can I add butter for more flavor?

You can lightly butter your bread before air frying for added flavor. Be careful not to add too much to avoid excess grease.

Can I make multiple slices of toast at once?

You can make as many slices as fit in a single layer in your air fryer basket without overcrowding. If the bread is too close together, it won't toast properly.

Can I make gluten-free or vegan toast in the air fryer?

Absolutely! You can use gluten-free or vegan bread to make air fryer toast. Experiment with a time between 3 and 5 minutes to find the right timing for your preferred brand of bread.

Toppings for Toast

  • Avocado toast: Everyone's classic favorite! Spread a thin layer of butter over your toast, then layer with sliced avocado. Season simply with sea salt flakes, freshly cracked black pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder. Enjoy with an Air Fryer Fried Egg!
  • Nutella: One of our personal favorite toppings for toast. This delicious hazelnut spread is even better with sliced bananas.
  • Almond butter: Both crunchy and smooth varieties of almond butter make excellent spreads for toast.
  • Nut butter: Other nut butters work as a great topping for air fryer toast, too!
  • Cinnamon sugar: A thin layer of butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar all over can make a regular slice of bread taste similar to your favorite recipe for French Toast. You can even cut it into slices for French Toast sticks to dip in maple syrup. Give it a try!
  • Cheese: Melt a little cheese on top for an open-faced air fryer grilled cheese!
