Why you should air fry frozen green beans
- It's quick: You can have these frozen green beans ready to eat in under 15 minutes, no thawing required. There's no prep!
- It's simple: This recipe is as straightforward as adding the beans to the air fryer basket and shaking halfway through the cook time.
- It's tasty: We season these green beans with a humble but flavorful seasoning mixture, and then add Parmesan and garlic butter to really kick up the flavor.
- It's wholesome: For nutrition, green beans are low in calories and have a lot of nutrients to offer (source), and in the air fryer, it's even more wholesome thanks to the need for less oil than other methods (source).
Ingredients you'll need
- Whole Frozen Green Beans: Don't thaw your green beans, you'll be cooking them from frozen. You can find frozen green beans in the freezer section of your grocery store with the other frozen vegetables. Any brand will work; for example, Birds Eye green beans are a great choice.
- Oil Spray: Make sure not to use a cooking spray with additives, but instead a natural oil in a sprayer bottle, such as avocado oil or olive oil. See our guide to the best oils for air frying if you're not sure what oil you'd rather use.
- Kosher Salt: For best results, kosher salt is always recommended. You don't want to use table salt - it can add an unwanted metallic taste to food once cooked.
- Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper is our favorite, but if you only have the pre-ground stuff, that's fine.
- Garlic Powder: This adds a nice garlicky flavor without the risk of burning fresh garlic. If you want to learn how to roast fresh garlic in the air fryer, we have a roasted garlic recipe you can follow.
- Parmesan Cheese (optional): You don't need to add Parmesan if you don't want to, but the flavor is pretty irresistible. We like to use freshly grated Parmesan for this.
- Garlic Butter (optional): This is optional, but if you toss your green beans in garlic butter after cooking them it will really boost the flavor.

How to Air Fry Frozen Green Beans

Step 1
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F. When preheated, spray the air fryer basket lightly with oil. Make sure to use a natural oil in a sprayer bottle and not a pressurized cooking spray with additives. See our guide to air frying oils if you aren't sure what to use.

Step 2
Pour frozen green beans in the air fryer basket. It's okay if they overlap a little. You don't want these green beans to be thawed. If you're cooking fresh green beans, see our fresh green bean recipe instead.

Step 3
Air fry for 6 minutes, then open the air fryer basket and spray the beans with oil.

Step 4
Season the beans with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Shake the basket to evenly distribute the seasoning. Air fry for another 6 minutes, until you have tender yet crispy green beans cooked to your liking.

Step 5
When done to your liking, remove the green beans to a serving plate or bowl and drizzle with garlic butter and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese (optional). Serve as a side dish for your favorite air fryer dinners, and enjoy!
Tips for Air Frying Frozen Green Beans
- Cook from frozen – Do not thaw first or the green beans will be soggy!
- Be careful not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. Cook in a single layer to allow airflow around the food. If you're preparing large quantities of green beans, we recommend you cook in batches.
- Cook time may vary depending on your specific air fryer. All air fryer models vary, so you may find yours requires more or less time than ours.
- Use an oil sprayer with your preferred oil. Do not use pressurized cooking spray with additives, as it can damage the non-stick surface of your air fryer.
- Recipe time and temperature is based on a preheated air fryer. If cooking in multiple batches, be sure to check on the remaining batches early, as they might cook more quickly.
- Remember to set your timer if your air fryer doesn't remind you to shake halfway through cooking!

Storage Instructions
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Make sure to cool completely before storing. We recommend you don't re-freeze cooked frozen green beans. To reheat, add them back to the air fryer for about 2-3 minutes until heated through.
Additional Seasoning for Green Beans
- Red Pepper Flakes: If you like spice, feel free to add some red pepper flakes to the green beans to add a layer of spicy flavor.
- Onion Powder: This plays nicely with garlic powder to add depth of flavor. We like to keep it simple, but you may want to try this!
- Lemon Juice: A squeeze of lemon juice pairs wonderfully with any veggie. We especially love it with green beans.
- Balsamic Vinegar: Honestly, just about any veggie tastes great with balsamic vinegar. This is a great choice if you're serving fish like salmon as the entree
- Bagel Seasoning: A quick and easy way to season just about anything is bagel seasoning. Give it a try for these green beans!
- Fresh or Dried Herbs: You can also use a dried herb seasoning blend for these green beans, like an Italian blend, or even fresh herbs, like parsley.
- Chili Seasoning: Okay - we love our chili seasoning. With everything. Including these green beans! Try it out!
FAQ
No; these green beans cook from frozen. If you thaw your green beans before cooking them, you risk them becoming soggy.
Air frying frozen green beans is genuinely a great way to keep them from getting mushy. Our recommendation is to avoid over-crowding the basket, make sure to season and shake halfway through the cook time, and cook exactly as directed in a preheated air fryer.
