There may be plenty of garlic butter recipes out there, but if you've always loved the garlic dipping sauce restaurants serve with pizza or seafood, this one is the one you're looking for. It melts to smooth perfection, with all of that salty, buttery, garlicky flavor you want in a good garlic butter dip. We won't keep you waiting. Let's make this awesome garlic butter sauce recipe together!
Garlic Butter Dip Ingredients
- Fresh Garlic: We recommend only using fresh garlic cloves for this recipe. You can mince it using a garlic press or a sharp knife. Garlic powder will not give you the same results.
- Light Olive Oil: Yes, you read that right - we're using butter and oil! Using both butter and olive oil is what gives this sauce not only the creamy, rich flavor of butter, but the higher smoke point of olive oil. That means you can cook the minced garlic easily without burning it.
- Kosher Salt: We highly recommend using kosher salt and not fine table salt, for best flavor.
- Unsalted Butter: If you're using salted butter, omit the kosher salt. For best results, use your favorite high-quality butter, such as Kerrygold (our personal favorite). Really, though, any butter will taste amazing as garlic sauce.
- Parsley (Optional): We like to finish our garlic butter with some fresh parsley for color and flavor. But, this is completely optional.

How to Make Garlic Butter Dipping Sauce
Step 1
In a microwave-safe bowl, add minced garlic, light olive oil, salt, and butter.
Step 2
Cover the bowl with a paper towel. Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds.
Step 3
Stir to combine. If there are still solid butter pieces, microwave for another 15-20 seconds until completely melted. Be sure to cover the bowl!
Step 4
Stir to combine until all of the butter melts. Then, strain to remove the minced garlic. Top with fresh parsley if desired.
Recipe Tips
- Always cover the bowl with a paper towel or a paper plate in case the butter spatters as it cooks. You don't want to have to clean butter out of your microwave. Trust us on that one.
- Use light olive oil, as it has a higher smoke point and mild flavor as opposed to other olive oils. Not sure what the difference is? See our guide to oils for air frying - it applies here, too!
- If using salted butter, be sure to leave out the extra salt. Add extra salt to taste if desired.
- After melting the garlic butter, you can mix things up by adding fresh herbs such as parsley, chives, thyme, or rosemary, to make a garlic herb butter. This is an awesome way to vary the flavor for different recipes.
- Straining is optional. If you want a chunky garlic butter sauce, you can leave the minced garlic in. In our opinion, however, a smooth sauce is always more enjoyable than a chunky one. Additionally, if you're not using the sauce immediately, the garlic flavor will intensify over time when stored and it could become too strong.
- Garlic butter dip goes with so many dishes. From pizza crusts to pasta, vegetables, steak, seafood, and chicken, you really can't go wrong with garlic butter as a dipping sauce. Some of our favorites to serve it with are just below.
How to Store Garlic Butter Dipping Sauce
- Store garlic butter in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. When ready to enjoy again, heat gently in the microwave, stirring often, to melt the butter into a sauce as needed. However, it's essential to check for any signs of spoilage! Keep an eye (and a nose) out for an off appearance or smell.
- You can also freeze garlic butter for several months. Thaw it in the refrigerator before using it again, and make sure to leave a bit of air at the top of whichever container you store it in to account for liquid expansion.
