Ingredients in Roasted Garlic Butter
- Whole Garlic Bulb: Don't break it down into cloves of garlic; we're using a whole head of garlic to make this butter!
- Light Olive Oil: This is our recommended oil for air frying. See our guide to air frying oils if you'd like to try other options. (Don't worry, we'll include instructions for roasting garlic in the oven, too, if you don't have an air fryer.)
- Kosher Salt: Avoid using table salt. Kosher or sea salt work best.
- Black Pepper: Freshly cracked black pepper is always best, but pre-ground pepper works just fine.
- Butter: Use unsalted butter at room temperature (softened). If your butter is salted, omit the salt from the recipe.
- Parsley: This is optional, but a little bit of fresh parsley adds vibrant flavor and color to this roast garlic spread that we personally love. For other herbs, you can try adding thyme, rosemary, or even basil to vary the flavor.
How to Make Roasted Garlic Butter
Step 1
Preheat your air fryer or oven to 400℉. Peel off most of the garlic's outermost skin, while leaving the whole bulb intact (this is important).
Step 2
Trim about ¼-inch off of the top of the garlic bulb to expose the cloves.
Step 3
Place the garlic on a large piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle olive oil and a pinch of salt over the exposed cloves of the garlic. Close the foil into a pouch.
Step 4
Place the foil-wrapped garlic in your preheated air fryer basket and air fry for 35-40 minutes, until you can pierce the center of the bulb with a knife. NOTE: If you're using a full-size oven, roast for the same amount of time, but be sure to check its doneness with the knife before removing it from the oven at the 40 minute mark.
Step 5
Let the roasted garlic cool slightly, about 10-15 minutes.
Step 6
Once cooled, gently squeeze the root end to push out the soft, roasted garlic cloves into a small bowl. Discard the skin.
Step 7
Using the back of a fork, mash the garlic with salt and pepper.
Step 8
Add softened butter and mix until combined.
Step 9 (Optional)
Add fresh chopped parsley to the bowl and mix to combine.
Step 10
Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap and add the butter to the center. Roll into a log and store in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can store the butter in an airtight container.
Recipe Tips
- Larger bulbs of garlic, such as elephant garlic, may need more time to roast.
- Variations: Add chopped herbs such as parsley, chives, thyme, or rosemary for a garlic herb butter.
- Cook time may vary depending on your specific air fryer. Remember, air fryer brands vary, so you may have to adjust the cook time to your specific air fryer.
- Recipe time and temperature is based on a preheated air fryer. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, set it 400℉ for 5 minutes before adding food.
