Air Frying Frozen Onion Rings
What's not to love about onion rings? Golden and crunchy on the outside while tender and sweet on the inside, onion rings are a crave-worthy snack or side dish. Yet, capturing that perfect texture with frozen onion rings can feel impossible. We've all been there with sad and floppy baked onion rings, right?
This is where Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings really shine. The air fryer replicates the irresistible taste and texture of your favorite restaurant-style onion rings, all without the need for excessive oil or the lengthy process of frying or making them in the oven.
That's the magic of air frying frozen onion rings! They're quick, satisfyingly crispy, and easy to clean up after. Let's get air frying!
Ingredients
- Frozen Onion Rings: Frozen Onion Rings can be found in the frozen foods section of your local grocery store. We highly recommend Nathan’s Frozen Onion Rings as our favorite brand of onion rings! After trying various kinds, we've determined that Nathan's are the best frozen onion rings for the air fryer. A close second in our favorites is Alexia onion rings.
Note: You do not need any cooking spray, olive oil spray, or oil of any kind to achieve crispy onion rings with this recipe. We recommend you cook them directly out of the freezer with no additional oil.
How to Air Fry Frozen Onion Rings
Step 1 - Preheat: Preheat the Air Fryer to 400°F. This step is necessary for achieving crispy air fryer onion rings.
Step 2 - Arrange the Onion Rings: Next, arrange the frozen onion rings in a single layer with no overlap. Be mindful not to overcrowd the basket, or they may not cook evenly. If you’re dealing with a large quantity of onion rings, it might be necessary to cook them in several batches.
Step 3 - Air Frying Frozen Onion Rings: Air fry the onion rings for 6-8 minutes. Turn the onion rings over halfway through the cooking time using tongs to avoid burning yourself.
Step 4 - Cool, Serve, and Enjoy: After cooking, remove the onion rings from the air fryer and let them rest for a few minutes to cool down a bit. Then, dive into your crispy, golden-brown onion rings with your favorite dipping sauce on the side, and enjoy!

Using a Toaster Oven Style Air Fryer Oven
The following instructions are for a toaster-oven style air fryer, such as the Breville Smart Oven Air.
- Preheating the Air Fryer Oven
- Start by preheating your air fryer to 400°F. This step guarantees your onion rings will achieve that desired crispy texture.
- Arranging the Onion Rings
- Carefully arrange the frozen onion rings on the air fryer tray in a single layer. It's important not to overcrowd the tray to guarantee even cooking. If you have a significant number of onion rings, you may need to cook them in batches.
- Air Frying the Onion Rings
- Proceed to air fry the onion rings for 8-10 minutes, until they are crispy and thoroughly heated. If necessary, turn the onion rings halfway through the cooking time using tongs, to ensure they cook evenly on both sides.
- Cooling and Enjoying
- After cooking, remove the onion rings from the air fryer and allow them to rest. Give them a few minutes to cool down slightly. This patience pays off when you can enjoy your crispy, golden-brown onion rings at the perfect temperature.
Recipe Tips
- Keep an eye on the onion rings while air frying to prevent overcooking.
- Don't crowd the air fryer basket. If you're preparing a large amount of onion rings, it's best to cook them in batches.
- Reheat in the air fryer to maintain the crispy texture.
- Cook time may vary according to your air fryer model. You may have to adjust the cook time slightly to your specific air fryer.
Storage Instructions
Air Fryer Frozen Onion Rings are definitely best eaten the same day, but if you happen to have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. To reheat, simply pop them back in the air fryer for a few minutes to keep them nice and crispy.
