Can you air fry hot dogs?
We asked ourselves this question, too. It seems simple, right? Right! Air fryer hot dogs are super easy to make, and the results are worth it. You don't have to watch a pan to make sure they don't burn - just prep the hot dogs by scoring them, add them to the air fryer at 400°F, and prep the rest of your meal while you wait. They cook in 7 minutes!
So, how do air fryer hot dogs taste?
Just plain delicious! We recommend you score the hot dogs before air frying them. When you score the tops of the hot dogs, they develop crispy skin on top, which adds even more flavor, while remaining deliciously juicy inside. We think you'll be surprised how tasty an air fried hot dog is!
How to Score Hot Dogs for Air Frying
Use a sharp knife to make small, diagonal, shallow slits in each hot dog. Be careful not to cut all of the way down through the hot dog; just slightly cut about 3-4 diagonal slits in the top of each hot dog.

Ingredients
- Hot Dogs: Use your favorite hot dog brand - any will work. We're using ALDI's Parkview Uncured Angus Beef Hot Dogs, and absolutely love them. But, again, you can use any hot dogs - including turkey dogs. Some other favorites are Nathan's Famous hot dogs or Hebrew National hot dogs.
- Hot Dog Buns: We're using top-slit brioche hot dog buns, which are absolutely delicious and don't need to be buttered before toasting. If you're not using brioche buns, we highly recommend brushing a little melted butter all over the inside of the bun so it gets lightly golden brown when toasted for the best flavor.
Note: You do not need any cooking spray for this recipe.

How to Air Fry Hot Dogs

Step 1
Preheat your air fryer to 400°F, then score your hot dogs by using a sharp knife to make 3-4 small, shallow slits diagonally across the tops of each hot dog. Make sure not to cut too deeply. Scoring is optional, but we highly recommend it.

Step 2
Once the air fryer is preheated and your hot dogs are ready, place the hot dogs in a single layer in the air fryer basket. If you're cooking a large batch of hot dogs, make sure they don't overcrowd the air fryer. Cook in batches if necessary.

Step 3
Air fry hot dogs at 400°F for 6-7 minutes, or until the internal temperature reads 150°F to 160°F as read by a meat thermometer.

Step 4
Carefully remove the hot dogs from the air fryer, then add the buns. Air fry buns in a single layer for 1-2 minutes until crisp and toasted. Toasting the buns is optional according to your taste preferences.
Finally, the most important step: serve, and enjoy!

Toaster Oven Style Air Fryer Instructions
The following instructions are for toaster-oven style air fryers with a tray, such as the Breville Smart Oven Air. Note that these models take longer to cook than air fryers with a basket.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F.
- Score hot dogs following the steps above. This is optional, but recommended.
- Place the hot dogs in a single layer on the air fryer tray. Air fry for 8-10 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 150 to 160°F.
- Remove from the air fryer, then place the buns in a single layer on the tray. Air fry 1-2 minutes, until toasted to your liking.
- Carefully remove the buns, then serve the hot dogs, and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Score your hot dogs for the best results.
- Use an instant read thermometer to check internal temperature. Insert the thermometer into thickest part of hot dog.
- Cook time may vary depending on your specific air fryer; all air fryer brands vary. As always, use the cook time and temperature as a guide until you are more comfortable with your specific brand of air fryer.
- If cooking in multiple batches, be sure to check on the remaining batches early, as they may cook more quickly.
Hot Dog Toppings
- Ketchup and mustard: The classic! You can't go wrong with ketchup and mustard for a hotdog.
- Chili and cheddar cheese: Chili cheese dogs are delicious, and if you haven't tried one yet, now's the time! Cheddar is our favorite, but you can also use other types of cheese like Jack cheeses.
- Relish/pickles: Pickle relish is a great choice for a hotdog topping, and pairs very well with ketchup and mustard. However, if you don't have any relish on hand, you can also chop up some pickles for a nice added crunch and flavor.
- Sauerkraut: This is especially great with German-style hotdogs.
- Beans and bacon: You can enjoy this on more than just a bun - cook up your baked beans and some crispy air fryer bacon, then combine it with sliced air fried hotdogs.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover hotdogs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, separately from the buns.
FAQ for Air Frying Hot Dogs
Yes, but to air fry hot dogs wrapped in bacon, you will have to cook them longer. Secure the bacon with toothpicks after wrapping it around the hotdogs, then air fry for 10-12 minutes at 400°F. Flip them halfway through the cook time. If they aren't done to your liking, air fry them for another minute at a time until they are.
Make sure to preheat the air fryer, and avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. The most common cause of food not heating through or cooking properly in the air fryer is overcrowding, so make sure to cook in batches if necessary.
