We're big fans of refrigerated cookie dough- who isn't? But to be honest, we're not big fans of baking them and having to wait for so long. That's what inspired us to make air fryer cookies instead, for a quick and delicious treat perfect for making in small batches!

This is your favorite classic cookie recipe, made simple in the air fryer. You can use your favorite refrigerated cookie dough or even a homemade dough you've stored in the fridge, like these Quaker Oatmeal Cookies, if you'd like. If you're craving quick warm fresh chocolate chip cookies, this is the way to go! Let's get started!

Ingredients

  • Refrigerated Cookie Dough: We're using Nestle Toll House cookie dough - specifically chocolate chip cookie dough. You can air fry any kind of refrigerated dough you like best, like peanut butter cookies, sugar cookies, or another brand like Pillsbury; just pick your favorite. As we mentioned above, you can even use homemade refrigerated dough if you prefer.

Our 7 quart air fryer can accommodate about 6 balls of cookie dough from a package of 24. If you want to make more at a time, you'll either need a larger air fryer or to bake them in batches. Be sure not to overcrowd the air fryer, or your cookies won't bake evenly.

One more thing - you'll need parchment paper to make this quick dessert! It's necessary to use parchment paper with holes for proper circulation. If you don’t have air fryer parchment paper liners with holes, you can use a hole punch to make holes in regular parchment paper if needed. Just fold several times and punch holes. Holes facilitate air flow to ensure cookies bake evenly.

CAUTION: Monitor air frying closely when using parchment paper. Sometimes parchment paper can fly up into the burner when using with lighter weighted foods and become a fire hazard. It's always a good idea to stay close when cooking in any appliance.

How to Air Fry Cookies

Parchment paper with holes in it for use in the air fryer basket.

Step 1

Line your air fryer basket with an air fryer parchment paper liner.

Step 2

Remove 6 cookie dough squares from the package; refrigerate the rest. Roll each cookie dough square into a round ball in your hands. Flatten them slightly in the palm of your hand into about a 1½-inch circle.

Step 4

Place the cookie dough rounds on parchment paper in the air fryer basket around the edges, spacing them evenly apart. Be sure to place the cookie dough rounds evenly to help hold the parchment paper in place while air frying. Avoid putting cookies in the center of the basket.

Step 5

Air fry at 325°F for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown to your liking.

Step 6

The cookies will be very soft. Allow them to cool in the basket for 3-5 minutes or until set. Use a spatula to carefully remove them to a wire rack for cooling, then serve and enjoy!

Our Tips for Air Frying Cookies

  • For best results, place the cookies in a circle pattern around the basket (as shown in our pictures). This helps hold the parchment down. Additionally, in our testing, we found cookies placed in the center of the basket over the tray handle did not get completely baked.
  • Air fryer settings vary according to brand and model. If your air fryer does not have the exact temperature setting called for in the recipe, consult your manual for suggested temperature settings.
  • Use air fryer parchment paper liners with holes.
  • This recipe does not require preheating your air fryer. Just set the temperature, and start. If you do preheat, never preheat with parchment paper alone as it could fly up into your heating element and catch on fire.
  • For best results, don't crowd the air fryer basket. Air fry one batch of cookies at a time.
  • We tested this recipe in a 7-quart air fryer. If using a smaller air fryer, reduce the amount per batch. The cookies need space to spread and for the air to flow around them.
  • Just like baking cookies in the oven need to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet, air fryer cookies need to cool in the air fryer basket to set up properly, as they will be too soft to handle at first. Therefore, be sure to follow the cooling steps as outlined in the recipe.

Can I air fry frozen cookie dough?

Dough may be frozen for up to 2 months if frozen before the "use by" date on the package. Frozen dough can be air fried by adding 1-2 minutes to the time to achieve your desired texture.

If you like your cookies a little crispy, air fry them for an additional 30 seconds or so before allowing them to set and cool.

Recipe Variations

Toaster Oven Style Air Fryer Instructions

The following instructions are for toaster-oven style air fryers with a tray, such as the Breville Smart Oven Air. Note that these models take longer to cook than air fryers with a basket.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 325°F.
  2. Line the air fryer tray with parchment paper.
  3. Remove 6 cookie dough squares from package. Refrigerate remaining cookie dough for later.
  4. Roll each cookie dough square into a round ball and flatten slightly in the palm of your hand to about a 1½-inch circle.
  5. Place cookie dough rounds on parchment paper, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  6. Air fry for 11-13 minutes or until cookies are golden brown to your liking.
  7. Remove baking tray from air fryer oven and let cookies cool on tray for 5 minutes or until set enough to handle.
  8. Using a spatula, carefully transfer cookies to cooling rack. Serve warm or set aside until ready to enjoy.

FAQ

Do you need parchment paper for cookies in air fryer?

Parchment paper with holes designed for the air fryer is a great way to bake cookies in the air fryer. Keep in mind, however, that there are safety precautions to take when using it! It should be weighted down sufficiently by the cookies so there's no chance of it flying up into the heating element.

Can I use other types of cookie dough for air fryer cookies?

Absolutely. Keep in mind that however large you make your cookies will affect the cooking time, but otherwise, it should be around the same timing for almost any refrigerator cookie dough.

Storage Instructions

  • For chewy cookies, store in an airtight container. For crisper cookies, you can leave the lid a little loose. Keep them at room temperature for around 1 week or so.
