Chicken in the air fryer turns out so crispy, yet perfectly juicy. Best of all, you can easily cook chicken breast perfectly in the air fryer without worrying about drying it out. (We've all been there.)
Why air fry bone in chicken breast?
- It's quick! Air frying takes less time than the oven and saves on energy, too. It will take you less than 30 minutes, including preheat time, to air fry bone in chicken breasts. This air fryer chicken breast recipe is a game-changer for making quick chicken dinners!
- It's easy! There's hardly any prep work required, with no marinade necessary. You can marinate the chicken if you want, but you won't have to for great chicken.
- It's crispy! Air fryer skin-on chicken breasts brown beautifully on the outside while the inside remains tender, coming together for irresistibly juicy chicken breasts.
Ingredients to Air Fry Bone-in Chicken Breasts

- Chicken Breasts: Look for bone in skin on split chicken breasts. If you prefer boneless skinless chicken breasts, see our recipe for air fryer thin chicken breasts instead.
- Oil Spray: Use a natural oil such as avocado oil or light olive oil when air frying chicken breast. Avoid commercial cooking sprays as they contain additives that break down the nonstick coating of your air fryer. For more info, see our guide to oils.
- Chili Rub Seasoning: While you can use any seasoning you like best, we highly recommend trying our chili rub seasoning. It is super flavorful! For a very simple chicken seasoning alternative, you can also use a mix of kosher salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Feel free to add fresh herbs at the end like chopped fresh parsley, too.
How to Air Fry Bone-in Chicken Breasts

Pat chicken dry
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Pat bone in skin on chicken breasts dry with paper towels. This is an important step, so don't skip drying the chicken!

Season chicken
Spray each chicken breast with oil, then sprinkle with chili rub seasoning, being sure to rub the seasoning all over the chicken breasts to coat evenly. Pat the seasoning down.

Place in air fryer basket
Place chicken breasts in the preheated air fryer basket, skin side down, in a single layer.

Air fry chicken breasts
Air fry at 400°F for 22 minutes. Halfway through air frying, use tongs or a spatula to carefully turn chicken pieces over so the skin side is facing up. Continue air frying until the internal temperature reaches 150°F as read by an instant read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast meat without touching the bone. Depending on the thickness of the chicken, your cooking time may vary.

Serve and enjoy!
Remove the chicken breasts from the air fryer and let them rest for 10 minutes before slicing, to allow the chicken breasts to continue cooking and for the juiciest texture. Serve, and enjoy crispy skin and juicy chicken with great flavor!
Recipe Tips
- Use an oil sprayer filled with your preferred oil. Avoid using pressurized cooking sprays with additives as they might damage the air fryer non-stick surface.
- Use silicone tipped tongs when turning the chicken breasts over halfway through cooking. The silicone tipped tongs won’t damage your air fryer’s non-stick finish and they will help keep you from getting burned when reaching into the air fryer.
- Always cook to the proper temperature. Like ovens, all air fryers are different, so use the cook time as a guide!
- Cook time may vary depending on your specific air fryer. As always, use the cook time and temperature as a guide until you are more comfortable with your specific brand of air fryer.
- If cooking in multiple batches, be sure to check on the remaining batches early, as they may cook more quickly.

What to Serve with Bone-in Chicken Breasts
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes until heated through.
Air Fried Bone-in Chicken Breast FAQ
Make sure to keep an eye on your chicken and use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. Chicken breast will dry out if overcooked, and all air fryer temperatures differ, so make sure to experiment to find the proper temp for your air fryer, using our recipe as a guideline. You can see the air fryers we use here. Additionally, don't score your chicken breasts or they will dry out, and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing to keep them juicy after they're done cooking.
For best results, pat the chicken breasts dry before air frying. This will help the seasoning adhere to the meat, and will also help the chicken crisp up and develop that golden brown exterior you're looking for with roasted chicken.
